Collection: Bapi Das
Bapi Das is a self-taught artist from Kolkata, India, known for his photorealistic embroidery art. Drawing inspiration from his experiences as an auto rickshaw driver, his work reflects memories of navigating Kolkata’s streets at night. He learned drawing from a neighbor and was influenced by the thread paintings he saw at Ava Art Gallery in Darjeeling. With guidance from artist Abhijit Dutta, Das honed his skills in picture composition. Using a needle and thread from women's dupattas, Das creates intricate details, often using a magnifying glass for precision. His work gained recognition at the 2018 Kochi Biennale, and he held his first group exhibition in 2014. His art has also been featured in Verve Magazine and The Wire.
