Collection: Seramuddin Chitrakar

Born in 1985 into a family of renowned painters and storytellers Seramuddin Chitrakar, a traditional Patua from Naya village in Pingla, West Medinipur, West Bengal, is one of the most authentic and dynamic custodians of Bengal’s narrative scroll-painting tradition — Patachitra, Seramuddin inherited the art from his parents, Bahar and Sehara Chitrakar. Beginning at the tender age of ten, he mastered both the intricate painting technique and the lyrical storytelling that accompany the Pata scrolls.

His paintings combine devotion, folklore, and social commentary, narrating episodes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Mangal Kavyas, while also addressing contemporary issues such as environmental crises, women’s rights, and global events like 9/11 and the Tsunami. Using hand-prepared natural pigments derived from soil, flowers, fruits, and leaves, Seramuddin upholds an ancient eco-conscious practice. His scrolls, rich in rhythm and color, are living documents of Bengal’s oral and visual heritage.

Recipient of numerous awards and a participant in several national art workshops, Seramuddin’s works are housed in prestigious collections including Oxford University, Visva-Bharati, and the Crafts Council of India.
