Collection: Japani Shyam

Born in 1988 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh,

Japani Shyam Dhurwey, hails from a distinguished family of Gond artists. She is the daughter of the legendary Late Shri Jangarh Singh Shyam, who was instrumental in bringing Gond art to international recognition. Deeply inspired by her father’s vision, Japani developed her own distinctive style within the realm of contemporary Gond art, blending traditional tribal motifs with modern sensibilities and personal narratives. Her vibrant compositions often explore themes of nature, mythology, and the interconnection between humans and their environment.

Japani has exhibited widely across India, with notable solo and group shows at Galleries Ganesha (New Delhi), Chemould Gallery (Mumbai), Alliance Française (Bhopal and Delhi), Bharat Bhavan (Bhopal), and Lalit Kala Akademi (New Delhi). She has participated in numerous national and international art camps and workshops, including the ASEAN–India Artist Camp and the Korea–India Artist Camp. Recipient of several prestigious honours, including the Kamala Devi Award (1999) and Raja Ravi Varma Achievement Award (2022), Japani continues to be a leading voice in contemporary tribal art.
